EN-TILE-LY OBSESSED!

Updated: Aug 14, 2018

Do not pull out your 'grandmas' tile just yet. Trust me on this one. What may seem dated could just be trendy.

Kitchen by Shublin Donaldson

I will be the first to admit that patterned tiles can be overwhelming. For most, imagining the finished product once that one gorgeous tile is repeated is scary. But let's look a ways of using that beautiful tile without over doing it and making it work!

Bold tiles can transform your space from drab to fab. They make a much needed statement and act as artwork if done well on either floors or walls. Architects Shubin Donalds used mediterranean tiles against the industrial kitchen finishes. Proof that sometimes being bold just works.

It is important to remember that when you go for an intricate designed tile the rest of the space needs to be muted in style, color and design.

To keep or not to keep, that is the question

So you're renovating your home and not too sure about the current tile flooring. 'Wood' vinyl seems safe enough. Truth is safe can be boring, your home should reflect your personality and uniqueness. Super contemporary interiors are great but sometimes better in showrooms and catalogues. Personalise your space by keeping your current tiles as inspiration and build around them.

Editorial vs your home design

What works in editorial will not always work for your space. Think fashion, what we see on the run way may not fit in your every day life. The same applies with elements you select for your space, especially fixed. Common areas like the kitchen, guest bathroom, feature wall or patio are usually the best places to play around with your choice of tiles. More often then not, you won't spend most of your time in these spaces making that interesting patterned tile more exciting rather than overwhelming.

Start Small

If you really love the tile but are not too sure how it will work in your space, start small. Give your kitchen a little face lift by switching up the splash back tiles to your desired tile. You won't need much and thats enough to make a statement. Try changing up the tiles behind your vanity in your bathroom by selecting something simple with an interesting shape, design or a different finish to the rest of the bathroom
