Decorex JHB / 100% Design 2018 Review

Updated: Aug 14, 2018

The highly anticipated annual design event was a buzz this weekend. Here's who grabbed my attention.

Decorex SA, established in 1994, showcases design, decor and lifestyle exhibitions from the new kids on the block to the giants of the industry. This weekend I popped in to see whats hot in the design world and as expected, The Pillow Fluffer was not disappointed.

Lula's Clan

The young and talented Bonolo Helen Chepape's stall was one of the first to grab my attention at #100percentdesign this year. I was instantly drawn to the bright, vibrant geometric wall paper. The prints resembled that of the Memphis era and Ndebele print. Bonolo has also collaborated with #Mrpricehome where you can find her statement coffee table, scatter cushions and bedding https://www.mrphome.com/en_za/catalogsearch/result/?q=bonolo.

Take a look at her website https://lulasclan.com/collections/african-print-scatter-cushions and support young African talent.

Chair Up

The intricate weaving and handcrafted work seen in the works EBCS Design chairs had me at hello. The use of solid wood gives Ebrahim Assur's work a contemporary yet timeless look. Influenced by African art and design the curved legs on the chairs mirror the tusks of Rhinos and Elephants. What stood out the most was EBCS Design's modern take on what looks like ancient African chairs seen in ancient African history as stools for the chefs of tribes.

I Feel It In My Toes

Believe it or not, purchasing a good quality rug is an investment. If you are good to it, it will carry you for many years to come. Voke Rugs prides its self in quality rugs. The beautiful thought out patterns are thoroughly handcrafted using only the best yarn and fibers. Drawn in by the wide range of patterns I was sold by the feeling of each rug.

Style & Grace

Christine Goosen, founder and sole designer of @jacobscollection using achitecture as her inspiration for her designs. Capetonia fine arts designer combines texture, pattern and tone to achieve sophisticated designs. Delivering comfort and style all in one, Jacobs Collection was a definite favorite of mine.

The cubist looking Hoop Chair was a show stopper in its bright orange color and smooth velvet finish with the contrast of black steel framing. This was a winner for me. See more of her lovely work https://www.jacobscollection.co.za.

All For The Good

Something Good Studios based in Cape Town, collaborates with young illustrators and artists to produce interesting and trendy patterns. These patterns are then woven into beautiful blankets and throws. Something Good Studios believes in supporting local fibre farmers and craftsman to produce the stylish blankets. Their work however does not end in the world of design and homeware but is extended into charity organizations through the sales of the blankets and donations.
